Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for quick answers about our research services, collaboration opportunities, or upcoming initiatives? Explore our FAQs to learn more about the Curtin Frontier Institute for Geoscience Solutions (CFIGS) and how we can support your geoscience challenges.

The CFIGS platform allows companies to define and request research services that answer their current and future challenges. The solutions are a menu of options, from sample testing, data analysis and insight synthesis. A business can pick and choose the geoscience solutions they need or seek guidance on what’s possible.
Exploration and mining companies, government agencies, junior explorers/startups needing technical de-risking, technology and instrumentation companies (e.g. those integrating geoscience tools), and international research agencies or universities.
CFIGS fosters deeper research engagement for companies interacting with the natural world, especially exploration and mining companies looking to improve exploration success, exploit production efficiencies or enhance mining rehabilitation.
Our solutions are adaptable from site-specific challenges to large-scale, global applications. We can integrate multiple products into a broader research output. For instance, conducting a comprehensive geological survey over an extended period, using multiple analytical techniques to reduce exploration risk. Our solutions can be a complete service from rock to report (including processing, imaging and data reduction).
Examples include: Ore characterisation, including mineral chemistry to inform metallurgical processing and piloting of specialised leaching, purification and crystallisation processes. Dating to constrain the timing of mineral growth or a broader structural or fluid event critical to the formation of an ore deposit. Positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) applications, including system architecture design and testing with urban area positioning solutions, integrity monitoring systems and interference and jamming detection. Supply chain security fingerprinting analysis to verify the provenance and integrity of critical minerals to support traceability, ethical sourcing, and regulatory compliance. Integrated field mapping to resolve complex structures including tectonic reconstruction and crustal evolution models. Remote sensing and fire hazard mapping and mitigation of natural and agricultural land.
CFIGS offers a tiered pricing structure to suit a range of industry needs, from fully unrestricted collaborative research to confidential, commercially sensitive work. Unrestricted projects, where outcomes may be published and shared, can be lower cost. These projects benefit from reduced rates, reflecting the shared investment and mutual benefit in generating high-impact, co-branded research outputs. For commercial-in-confidence work requiring strict confidentiality, higher rates apply to reflect the premium placed on exclusive access to instrument time, dedicated personnel, and secure data handling. We also offer intermediate models, such as projects with agreed embargo periods before public release, which may be negotiated to strike a balance between commercial priorities and collaborative opportunity. All pricing and deliverables will be clearly outlined in a Research Agreement prior to commencement. CFIGS is committed to providing cost-effective solutions and will work with partners to explore co-funding opportunities where appropriate.
CFIGS can contract to whatever suits the client, from full commercial in confidence, embargo periods to unrestricted publishing rights. We understand the strategic importance of the data we handle and will work closely with clients to ensure all parties are satisfied. Commercial in confidence analyses attract a higher fee due to restrictions on alternative pathways to meet our KPI (publications) and removal of any university subsidisation of academic activities in the accessible public interest. Intermediate options of embargo periods and oversight of intended publications are available, and we prefer to publish in collaboration with our clients.
Final reporting timelines are project and technique specific and will be agreed in consultation with the client. Intermediate milestones and close working relationships can ensure that results can be acted on in a responsive manner, informing active operations. Expedited analytical and reporting workflows may be possible for high priority analyses.
Certainly, collaborative projects can be in many forms and there are a number of pathways through which longer-term agreements can be established involving students working in partnership alongside clients. Please get in touch to discuss.
