CFIGS Python Bootcamp Equips Geologists with Data Science Skills

The Curtin Frontier Institute for Geoscience Solutions (CFIGS) recently hosted a highly successful Python Bootcamp for Geologists, aimed at building coding confidence and data science skills within the geoscience community.

Python is increasingly becoming the language of choice for geoscientists, enabling advanced analysis of large datasets, automation of workflows, and integration of machine learning with geological interpretation.

Led by CFIGS experts Taryn Scharf, Luc Doucet, and Piero Sampaio, the workshop provided participants with a solid foundation in Python programming, showcasing its power for tasks such as geochemical data interpretation, principal component analysis (PCA), and geological mapping—tools that are transforming modern exploration and research.

Participants commended the bootcamp’s balance of technical content and applied examples, with many noting the sessions inspired them to adopt Python for future projects.
The event underscores Curtin’s commitment to equipping geoscientists with cutting-edge computational skills, ensuring they are prepared for the data-driven future of Earth sciences.
